I asked this question in the history section of Yahoo Answers, but I’m really excited to see if your answers are similar or different!
I have some thoughts myself about the reasons why covering this info in class is important, but I’m really curious to see why other people (you!) bevieve that learning about Mesopotamia and Egypt is or is not important for today’s youth.

All history is important to learn about. It gives us insight to the lives and cultures of those before us. Knowing about who they were helps understand the many different people on the planet today. How they lived, how they viewed life and death, what contributions they made, what accomplishments they had, the list goes on.

I, rather, am more inclined to agree with Sting, in his song, “History Will Teach Us Nothing.”
Unless you plan on becoming an archeologist, a professor of ancient cultures, or a habitual contestant on Jeopardy, it will serve no practical purpose.
They call it “rounding” your education, which is nice in theory, but it could really do a student well to focus attentions on skills that are interesting for that student to develop.
I am a physician, and, quite frankly, this question is the first time I’ve needed to conjure up any information or recall with respect to Mesopotamian history since I graduated high school.

..things..reffering to the civilisation from the begining to end is part of history,,i liked history at school..is nice to know about ancient time….and is very attractive when you learn about them….why not important..as i know they like to hear what the teacher has to say,,..is interesting..everything..in the world..and history..isn’t it?..we here have some magazines called atlas..with images from different country..and is nice..and interesting..with aspects of those country..geography,,even history….is so nice..to.see from other countries of the world..and history also..i think so….
