My dad's best friend is from Egypt (lived here for 40 years) and he has said if his mother didn't live in Cairo he would never go there. It is dirty, poor and smoggy to him now. The growing religious fanaticism/anti-Western beliefs in Egypt make him not want to visit.
He has gotten used to our standard of living and is very Americanized.
If you though it was hot yesterday be prepared for month after month of that in Egypt.
Egypt has been run by a dictator for 20+ years. Dissent isn't taken lightly and they have secret police everywhere.
The population is about 7 million spread over 500 packed square miles. They have worse pollution than LA because their cars don't have to have pollution controls.
There are middle class neighborhoods in Cairo and modern office towers.
If that sounds like the life for you, go for it. How do you plan to support yourself?

If you're Muslim, you'll probably be all right over there. If you're of any other religious faith, be prepared to be treated as sub-human.

You know the heat you felt today?

Get used to it! That's normal temperature in Egypt.

After living here for several years, I can recommend the following site:
http://www.seeegypt.com/ They are located in Maadi.
Lots of folks here have used them for our family trips to Lexor, Nile Cruises and for local tours in Cairo and Alexanfria. A good group, familiar with foreign travelers and very helpful. They get better airline pricing then Thomas Cook on international travel also. Enjoy

when u get there, right across the st from the musuem is the 'travel agent' district....or at least thats what I call it. Go into Several and compare packages etc. DONT go with the guy on the street telling u he has the hook up. Go into Professional looking places and see how their english is etc...ask LOTS of questions about guarantees etc etc. You will do ok. Just shop and compare.

Egypt
--------
Pyramids
Hieroglyphic writing
Mummification

Mesopotamia
-------------------

Code of Hammurabi
Epic of Gilgamesh
Ziggurats

Both had major advances in mathematics, architecture, and agriculture. In agriculture both grew grain and used irrigation.

Here is a nice answer that is appropiate just for you:

For long flights, why don't you take a soft pillow of your own so when it comes to sleeping at least you can say that "I slept like an angel!"

Don't for to take a camara with plenty of film (unless your camara is digital then all you need to do it is to get some more chips).
